Overview

GreekGuide is built around anonymity. You don't need an account to vote, post, or browse, and we deliberately avoid collecting information that could identify you personally. This page explains exactly what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it's used.

Information we collect

We collect only what's necessary to run the site's features:

• Chapter rankings. When you rank chapters, we store your tier selections (Top / Mid / Low). To prevent duplicate voting, we also store a device fingerprint — a short code generated in your browser by a third-party library, FingerprintJS, based on general characteristics of your browser and device. It isn't your name, email, or IP address, and we don't use it to identify you — only to check whether the same device has already voted for a given school recently.
• Discussion posts, comments, and replies. If you post to a discussion board, we store the nickname you choose, the content, a category, and a timestamp. Replies and comments work the same way. No account or email is required, and your nickname doesn't need to be your real name.
• Reports. If you report a post or comment, we store what you reported, the reason you selected, and a device fingerprint (the same kind used for rankings) so the same device can't submit duplicate reports against the same content.
• Contact form submissions. If you reach out through our Contact page, we store your message and, if you choose to provide them, your name and email — so we can respond to you. These fields are optional except for the message itself.
• Basic technical logs. Like most websites, our hosting and infrastructure providers generate standard request logs (timestamps, requested pages, general error information) to keep the site running and diagnose problems. These logs aren't tied to an individual identity on our end.

How we use local storage on your device

GreekGuide doesn't use cookies. Instead, a few small pieces of information are saved directly in your browser's local storage — they never get sent to us unless we describe otherwise above, and you can clear them anytime by clearing your browser's site data. We use local storage to:

• Remember which tab (Fraternities, Sororities, or Discussion) you last viewed for a school.
• Remember which posts and comments you've upvoted or downvoted, so your vote stays reflected if you revisit.
• Remember that you've already ranked a school recently, so we can show you an accurate message instead of letting you attempt a duplicate submission.
• Remember that you've already reported a specific post or comment, so the Report button reflects that.
• Remember small preferences, like dismissing a tip you've already seen.

What we don't collect

• We do not require or offer user accounts, so we never collect a password.
• We do not collect your name or email address unless you voluntarily provide it through the contact form.
• We do not collect precise location data.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
• We do not use advertising networks or cross-site tracking cookies.

Automated content review

Before a post, comment, or reply is published, it passes through an automated filter that checks for spam patterns and clearly abusive language. This is a purely automated, rules-based check — it doesn't involve a human reviewing your content before it's posted, and it isn't used to build a profile of you.

Third-party services

We rely on a small number of third-party services to operate GreekGuide, each of which only processes data on our behalf to provide their service — they don't use it for their own purposes:

• Turso hosts our database (rankings, posts, comments, reports, and contact messages).
• Resend delivers the email notifications we send ourselves when a new contact message or content report comes in.
• Our hosting provider serves the site itself and generates the basic request logs described above.

Data retention

Rankings, discussion posts, comments, and reports are retained indefinitely to keep rankings and discussions accurate and complete. Contact messages are retained as long as needed to address your inquiry and keep a record of it. If you'd like something you posted removed, contact us and we'll handle it promptly.

Children's privacy

GreekGuide is intended for college-aged users and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13; if you believe a child has submitted content to the site, please contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes to this policy

If we make a meaningful change to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of GreekGuide after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
